The first time I heard Don Florencio was from deep inside the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oaxaca, in 1997. His voice floated into the old arched and plastered rooms, as pure as an angel's and transfixed me with its beauty.
I thought it was a cd and asked an employee there about it. She said "No, it's Florencio from Zaachila -- listen", and gestured toward the open window. I had to go outside to see for myself that the ethereal voice came from a small man sitting on the sidewalk with his guitar.
There are other videos of him, younger and in good voice, on youtube. Inevitably someone comments on the youtube videos, wondering why he isn't famous. The lady in the museum in 1997 said many people have recorded him, promising to either send him a copy or to "do something" with it, but no one ever had.
Doesn't look as though anyone ever did.
