Annalisa Mirón, Esq., Executive Director of Bickel & Brewer Latino Institute of Human Rights at NYU School of Law

Annalisa Mirón has dedicated her career to public service, representing communities that have limited access to legal services. Prior to being named executive director of the Bickel & Brewer Latino Institute for Human Rights at NYU School of Law, Mirón served as an attorney at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem (NDS), where she engaged in holistic defense of Harlem residents accused of crimes. During her tenure there, she litigated approximately twenty misdemeanor and felony trials, successfully prevented clients from being evicted from New York City public housing, and worked alongside NDS's immigration lawyers to mitigate the potential immigration consequences of her clients' criminal cases. Before NDS, she worked as an attorney with the Criminal Justice Project of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Mirón received her B.A. in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999, graduating with the highest distinction in general scholarship. Mirón received her M.A. in Law and Society from NYU Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and her J.D. from NYU School of Law, where she was inducted into the Order of the Coif. She also received the Ann Petluck Poses Memorial Prize for outstanding work in a law school clinic. Mirón works with the Bickel & Brewer Foundation and NYU School of Law faculty to develop and implement the vision, policies, and strategic plan for the institute. She also serves as an adjunct professor for the Federal Defender Clinic at NYU School of Law.

On November 10, 2011, the Bickel & Brewer Latino Institute for Human Rights hosted its inaugural conference, "Legislating the Lives of Immigrants: The Entanglement of State and Local Governments in Immigration Policy."

This national conference brought together experienced practitioners, renowned academics, legislators, organizers, law students, and media representatives from across the country to discuss immigration policy and the involvement of state and local governments in the formation of that policy. The conference was held from 8am to 4pm on November 10, 2011 at NYU School of Law, Lipton Hall.

The world watched as Arizona enacted its controversial immigration law, Senate Bill 1070, in April of 2010. The toughest law at the time, SB 1070 provides local authorities unparalleled power in investigating individuals suspected of violating immigration laws. Since then, states like Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina have followed suit.

Sponsored by the Bickel & Brewer Latino Institute for Human Rights, "Legislating the Lives of Immigrants: The Entanglement of State and Local Governments in Immigration Policy" is a national conference that will explore controversial immigration measures being adopted at the state and local levels -- and how those measures impact the country in the areas of policing, housing, labor, and education.
