There are essentially two ways: You 'sling'/throw a small line into the tree attached to a throwbag, or you shoot the throwline into the tree witha big slingshot. Watch my vid dated Oct 21, 2009 to see how I do it.

That's a funny thing Josh, some like gloves and some don't. I suspect most prefer not to wear them - at least not the kind I'm wearing. I use some kind of Petzl 'rope tech' glove or something like that. I use them for two reasons. One, they've saved my you-know-what a couple times by adding friction to control something.
They also prevent sharp tree bark and splinters from 'wounding' your hands which can turn a fun climb into a distracting, painful climb.
