A brief introduction to the interesting sights in the townloand of Rosroe, Co. Clare.
Rosroe Tower House:
A reference, in Westropp (1899), informs us that Rossroe (Tower House) was built by Sioda MacNamara before 1402 A.D. Thus here we have the only late fourteenth century Tower House in the Barony of Bunratty Lower. In all probability it marks the introduction of this site into the area and in time over 30 similar sites were built.
Occupation continued into the sixteenth century as the 1580 A.D. College List informs us that at that period Fineen, son of Loghlen MacNamara, owned the site.
Its continued habitation is suggested by the pen drawing of 1680 executed by Dineley
Knocknalappa Wedge Tomb:
In general wedge-tombs may be defined as: "Tombs consisting of a main chamber, frequently with a short portico or ante-chamber at the front and occasionally a small end chamber at the rear... The chambers form a long relatively narrow gallery which decreases in height and width from front to rear. The front consistently faces in a general south-westerly direction..." O'Nuallain, 1979, 14-15.
Rosroe Lough (Lake)
This is quite a large lake and is primarily a Pike fishery. Bream and Roach are not present in this fishery but it does have all the other coarse fish indigenous to the area.
FACILITIES AND ACCESS
Access is located on the southern shoreline. In recent years a small section of the lake has been developed as a put and take trout fishery by the local land owner.
TO GET THERE
From Newmarket on Fergus take the road to Sixmilebridge. The lake is visible from the road.
