Yes, there was an IMSA Grand Prix of San Antonio on Labor Day weekend from 1987-1990. 1987 was Al Holbert's final victory before his tragic loss in an airplane crash. Derek Bell, A.J. Foyt, Hans Stuck, Robby Gordon, EFR, John Morton and many other famous names raced here. Dan Gurney visited our corner station one year. David Hobbs and Bob Varsha covered the race for ESPN (before SPEED TV existed). Every time I drive the streets around Hemisfair Plaza, I think of those days and smile.
I was there: Sept.2 '90. 15days after the crash this driver won the World Challenge in Tampa, Fl in GTLight. "Miracles do happen-if you have any doubts, just ask R. M." headline Autoweek sept.10 1990. "R.M. survived one of the worst-looking crashes these eyes have ever seen, a crash so lurid that not even Hollywood would stoop to use it" "It did not look like a survivable accident" "in truth, R.M.'s lucky escape from that fiery crash was a Miracle!"

Gee, i miss this kind of racing in Texas.....
Anxiously awaiting the new F1 course in Austin in hopes of seeing more road races there besides F1.
