This is a short video clip of Sukhvinder Singh Naamdhari "Pinky" performing a Tabla Solo. Accompanying him on Sarangi is Ilyas Khan Ji. This is video Part 3 of 5.
This clip is from a Chakardar concert organised in tribute to Pandit Kishan Maharaj Ji on 19th July 2008 in West London, England.
The information below is from the leaflet at the concert, written by Chakardar.
"Padmashree, Pandit Kishan Maharaj was one of the greatest tabla players of our time. Born in the holy city of Varanasi in 1923, his dramatic career dominated the tabla scene for the second half of the twentieth century.
Pt Kishan Maharaj's ancestry boasts many professionals musicians including his father Pt Hari Maharaj and his uncle Pt Kanthe Maharaj, under whose tutelage he flourished into a great maestro. Pt Kanthe Maharaj was a disciple of Pt. Baldeo Sahai who was the son of Pt. Bhairav Sahai, the son of Pt. Ram Sahai, the founder of the great Benaras Gharana (tabla Style).
Pt. Kishan Maharaj's ability to play cross rhythms and produce complex calculations, particularly in tihai patterns made him one of the most respected and popular tabla players of his time. He had an immense versatilty with regard to playing any kind of accompaniment, be it with the sitar, Sarod, Dhrupad, Dhamar or dance. He played a distinctively dramatic and dynamic style which raised the profile of tabla playing to a new hiatus.
Sukhvinder Singh Naamdhari is one of the best tabla players from the Benaras Gharana and suitably emulates his Guru's style. He received his initial training in saath from Ustad Nihal Singh Ji, and went to Varanasi (Banaras) where for several years he received intensive training and guidance from none other than the legendary Pt. Kishen Maharaj, the best known and internationally acclaimed exponent of the Benaras Gharana of tabla playing.
Sukhvinder is a shining star in the world of tabla accompaniment and tabla solo playing. He had performed with most of the leading artistes, such as Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez (Sitar), Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Rajan & Pt. Sajan Misra, Pt. Jasraj to name a few.
Ilyas Khan is a highly regarded sarangi artist who has perfected the art of nagma accompaniment. He is also an accomplished sarangi soloist and has performed throughtout the world with many great artists such as Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Tari Khan & Ustad Zakir Hussain."

With all due respect it wasn't Ilyas Ji who went out of lay. Pinky Ji just started the recitation of the composition from the wrong beat. Wonderful composition nonetheless :D

I think Illias Ji got off the track when Pinky was reciting. Thats the reason he had to go "Phir Se". However, I dont blame IlliasJi for this... the bols and Fractions of Banaras are so freakin complex, its enough to put off any accompanying musicians off the hook. Unless somebody is well versed (and well practiced) with the style of Benaras, its very likey that he might get de-tracked
