Maz Jobrani on the Show 24

"24" Season 4; 12:00pm-1:00pm. Two-dozen Muslim hostiles toting semi-automatics hold the U.S. Secretary of Defense hostage in a bunker outside Los Angeles. Within the hour they plan to execute him for war crimes. Why? "It's Jihad," explains the terrorist mastermind. Suddenly, U.S. agent Jack Bauer emerges through shadow and hurls a knife through the terrorist's neck. 24 and its hero Bauer, played by Keifer Sutherland, make for popular TV, with fifteen million U.S. viewers. But actor Maz Jobrani, who wouldn't take the role of the terrorist mastermind, says the show is bad for him and for America.

Maz, a bald, mustached Iranian American, grew up playing Li'l Abner and Batman in high school. In college, his Iranian parents pushed him to political science, which he dabbled in before deciding he liked the camera more than the lectern. But in the real world of Hollywood, auditions started coming in "for terrorist role after terrorist role" -- and "generic" terrorists at that "with no emotional or psychological complexity." For an actor, it was boring. For an Iranian, belittling. And for Americans, Maz says, it's dangerously oversimplifying.

@rbatheNORSEMAN ...check out the Wikipedia page about Persian people (the whole ethnolinguistic group). It comes up as error when I add the link, so if you Google 'Persian people' it's the first page listed. I know people complain about Wikipedia because anybody can edit it but there's quite a bit in the page and it's pretty decent I think.

@PersianAustralian Right. Well, I'm sure the darker ones are probably mixed with Arab or something. Hell, I don't know. But Iranians are kinda Indo-Europeans, right? So you guys are basically like the French, Greek, Italians, Portuguese, and Spanish when it comes to complexion? As in, someone usually from Britain or Scandinavia are probably likely to be pale, generally. No what I'm trying to say? My bro, who is my half brother, is French and he could pass for Mexican because he has olive skin.

@rbatheNORSEMAN I'm not offended...but I appreciate you taking care. :) I'm a little afraid to answer the question because I might start an argument about race and colour and also about the terms 'Persian' and 'Iranian' and I don't want to do either, and plus I can't give you a very sure answer. I'm olive/tan skinned myself and most other Persian people I know are similar in complexion but I also know some very dark skinned Persians and very fair skinned Persians. If you haven't already...

@PersianAustralian I don't know how to ask you this, and trying not to sound like a troll/spammer/whatever.. but, ethnically Persians/Iranians are white compared to Middle Easterners.. and the top ethnic group in Iran are Persians, right? Are Persians generally kind of tan-skinned unlike Arabs who are, imo, darker-skinned? Sorry, I don't mean any offense I'm just trying to learn about Middle Eastern people.
