Yeah, theres no way a government funded technology race with an opposing world power would warrant colour film...
The space race was ABOUT showing off.

I meant "natural color" photography. Earlier color movies used hand coloring techniques, such as Pathécolor.

1912? Theres colour footage from Scottland right here on YouTube from 1903, I think, theres a 'Trooping' from 1906 for King George of England at Buckingham Palance in Colour. Colour film, the earliest, dates to about 1897 I believe. It was just really not considered feesable or required in firt half of the 20thC, was too expensive and difficult to 'Bother' with such a shame really but really quite good colour film starts showing up from about 1930. 1st color TV 19,er 29? I think

IT'S A CONSPIRACY!
Actually color movie techniques go back to 1912. Kodachrome for movies came out in the 1930s.

I have some old 8mm reels that my Uncle filmed back in the early '60s that were color - no sound though.

codenamegizmo: color tv for households was available in the 50's (very shortly after black & white tv) in the west - but was not actually feasible to make cost effectively, especially for consumers, until the late 60's. by the early 70's color tv's were much more common - also in some western european countries as well.
