November 2009, Michael Kimber was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at the age of 25. Facing terrifying insomnia and constant anxiety he turned to the Nova Scotian mental health system and was told he would have to wait six months to see a state sponsored therapist. While many of his friends got to this point and stopped looking for help, Michael was lucky enough to have a family that could pay for professional counseling and with the help of friends, family and his first love he recovered.

In November of the 2010, he started the internationally recognized Come Out campaign, encouraging people with mental illness to tell their own stories to show how terrifyingly common mental illness actually is. By speaking for himself, he has encouraged thousands to do the same.

Michael is currently working on a book about his experiences called the Cure, about his own struggle to accept himself and the people that reminded him who he was when he forgot.

Michael wants us to start talking about mental illness. Join the conversation and speak for yourself.

One correction and important one. Jason L Walsh died in 2005. A sincere apology to his friends and family from Egg Films.

  • This video is dedicated to my friend Jason Lionel Walsh. He was a good friend of mine and was an incredibly gentle, kind and loving man. At the age of 20 he died as a result of his mental illness. No one ever talked to us about seeking help or the tricks your mind can play on you. When I was in my darkest hours, I remembered what it felt like to lose someone as amazing as Jason. Due to my own error the date of his death is wrong in the video. I'm truly sorry to his friends and family.

  • Michael this is simply amazing, we met a few times back in the day in high school...I just wanted to say I am so happy you are sharing your story with the world. Commend you on your bravery!

  • Incredibly brave, and incredibly accurate. Thank you, Michael Kimber :)

  • amazing

  • Interesting video idea. i actually tried to watch this twice, but never finshed either viewing. Sorry, but i'm allergic to anxiety and this video makes me too queasy.

Perhaps it is the music. i'll try again some other time. Thank you.

  • Kimber - GENIUS!!! I KNOW what you went through - a dark night of the soul. Dude is it an epidemic or just the result of a highly sensitive nature that pics up on things that no one ever taught us how to deal with...process. Like you - tried tons of pills. Then I just send to hell with it and took 60 to go to sleep ...for ever. Woke up in ICU 5 days later on a respirator. And then...quantum leap of light. Anyone who has gone through this is my spiritual family. Sending you love!

  • fantastic

  • Really like this. Beautiful video.

  • Brilliant and Moving. Here's this Parents response on my website sqeeky wheel . com sorry about the link

  • Michael, Thank you! I am moved not only by your words and courage, but your strength in honoring your friend. I too had a friend that died and wish I had your talent to honor her too. You have inspired me to try. Kudo's to you! I believe as you do; not until we put our face on mental illness, will the stigma disappear. From an advocate that is older, I truly believe that your generation will be the one that succeeds.

  • there needs to be more mental health awareness .. hell i've got mad anxiety.
