Planet Wisp
Modern
Challenge 5
Orange Rocket, Blast Off!

In Sonic Colors, the Wisps allowed Sonic to turn into some different objects, giving him new abilities. For the most part, they allowed Sonic to reach places he's normally not able to reach, either directly or through stage design. And in the Wii version, they were completely unnecessary except in boss fights, as Super Sonic couldn't use them.

Modern Sonic in Sonic Generations gets the Orange Rocket, which definitely allows Sonic to reach places he normally can't (or would need a lot more trouble to reach). True to its name, Sonic goes straight up with the Orange Rocket, though in this game, you can steer it slightly. Pretty simple. And it makes sense to have these Wisps in the mostly vertical stage design in Modern Sonic's half of Planet Wisp.

A new gimmick seen here are platforms that can only be destroyed from below with the Orange Wisp. They're indicated by having the Rocket emblem on them. Why Eggman decided to put up signs telling Sonic what to use to break through, I don't know. But it does make it easier to figure out what to do next.

Well, until you get to the end, which is the reason why I consider this challenge the hardest one to S-Rank in the game: You have to pick the most efficient paths and hit the Goal Ring on your first attempt, because if you miss the Goal Ring, Sonic will continue on up and have to make his way back down.

Makes sense though, as this is Modern Sonic's last challenge in this game (even after Action Master, which personally feels like a final challenge).

  • Why did they use Rocket wisp for Modern? Doesn't suit him too well.

  • @CuriousUserX50 What would you have preferred?

  • Actually, they WERE nessecary in the Wii. Levels get tweaked for Super Sonic, though.

  • @Lukethehedgehog1 They were? I couldn't recall even one.

Oh right, like the Blue Cubes in Starlight Carnival Act 1, huh? I didn't know stages were changed to fit Super Sonic.

  • Green hill act 2 with Sonic Boom playing?

  • @Weciwhite17 No thanks, I already used "Sonic Boom" in Resisting Arrest.

  • @pet1996 There is an Achievement/Trophy you get for S-Ranking all of the main stages, but you're not required to S-Rank any challenges.

  • A question: Do you earn something by getting S-Ranks in missions? Because i played Sonic Generations the day before yesterday and i saw that some missions can be pretty annoying to S-Rank...
