Following Mineau's testimony, Evelyn Reilly, sitting to Mineau's right at the table in front of the Committee members, took the lead in putting forth MFI's position on the several pro-life bills, as well as those pertaining to sexual ethics and public breast-feeding. In voicing her opposition to a law that would eliminate the state's parental consent law on abortion, Reilly reminded the committee members that Massachusetts "abortionists know which judges will rubberstamp their request for bypassing the law requiring the consent of one parent" and that H1735 would remove even the minimal protection of a judge. "The relationship between children and parents must be respected and not be treated as disposable," Reilly concluded.
Two proposed bills, H1734 and S813, as well as H1709, would remove protections for women barring "unlawful" abortions. "This minimal legal protection for women from exploitation by others pressuring them to abort their unborn children should remain in place," said Reilly in her written testimony. "Those who want to maximize the number of abortions, for profit motives and otherwise, are being totally greedy ... it would seem their goal is that no unborn child in an unplanned pregnancy should escape."
Finally, Reilly lent MFI's support to the latest attempt to strengthen the state's informed consent laws pertaining to women seeking abortions. "This bill would simply hold abortionists to the same standard of informed consent as any other medical procedure," Reilly explained about H1637. "Many women have abortions because of pressure from boyfriends, sexual predators, or family members. A mandatory 24-hour waiting period would give her a chance to get out from under that pressure and, armed with information about alternatives, truly make her own choice."
It remains to be seen how the committee will handle each of these bills. They have the choice to pass the bills on to the House and Senate with either a "favorable" or "unfavorable" tag attached to them. They could also simply send them to a "study," the usual graveyard for the majority of bills. There is no certain timetable for the committee's actions, but MFI will continue to track the progress of these bills and alert you as further action is necessary.
It's pretty simple:
Don't raise your daughter to be an amoral little tramp with the unabaited libido of a mongrel bitch in heat, and you won't have to worry about parental consent for abortion.
