From the first century to the twentieth there is absolute unanimity. St. Ignatius of Antioch writes: "Be not deceived, my brethren. If any man followeth one that maketh schism, he doth not inherit the kingdom of God. If any one walketh in strange doctrine, he hath no fellowship with the Passion" (Philadelphians 3). Origen says: "Let no man deceive himself. Outside this house, i.e. outside the Church, none is saved" (Hom. in Jos., iii, n. 5 in P.G., XII, 841). St. Cyprian speaks to the same effect: "He cannot have God for his father, who has not the Church for his mother" (Treatise on Unity 6). The words of the Fourth Ecumenical Council of the Lateran (1215) define the doctrine thus in its decree against the Albigenses: "Una est fidelium universalis Ecclesia, extra quam nullus omnino salvatur" (Denzinger, n. 357); and Pius IX employed almost identical language in his Encyclical to the bishops of Italy (10 August, 1863): "Notissimum est catholicum dogma neminem scilicet extra catholicam ecclesiam posse salvari" (Denzinger, n. 1529).

  • Very clear, and thorough presentation!

  • @Imaginefree69

Pi =/= 3.1415 either. This is also a rounded off estimation. It is merely more precise then the one recorded in the Bible. As I said, if you want geometry textbooks go to a high school. How many days in the year according to the Bible? Do you say their are 365 days/year?

  • @Imaginefree69 "The madman has no lost his reason, he has lost everything but his reason" -G.K. Chesterton. But you are even more wretched as you are even particularly reasonable. It doesn't say "made" anywhere. I have read the KJV, RSV, & Douay Versions. NONE say made. Just b/c it pleases your prejudices to see saying made doesn't make it so. The main English versions don't agree w/ you. Unless you have some sound scholarship on the original Hebrew, your assertion is demonstrably false on face.

  • "If you add the handbreadth it does become Pi= 3.1415."

    Nice try.

It will be interesting to see what you do with talking animals.

  • Irrational religious double-talk.

Samuel says God made David do it.

Chronicles says Satan made David do it.

And YOU say that David did it all by himself!

    Talk about "willingly deceived."

  • @Imaginefree69

It says the Lord was angered by the people & incited David against the people. (2 Sam 24) It says Satan incited David. (1 Chron 21) God makes allowances for evil b/c of our evil desires. Much as He made allowances for Israel in the Wilderness. They suffered then for their own evil desires, as they did under David. It was David's own choice to do evil. God didn't stand in his way.

You to learn & understand the whole of God's covenant tradition, including the Oral Tradition.

    1 Kings 7:26

And it was an handbreadth thick,......

If you add the handbreadth it does become Pi= 3.1415.......

  • Other religious books give other formulas.

In fact, your Bible gives several different formulas

    for obtaining salvation.

But, really, ancient books of myth

are poor foundations for a rational life.

  • "Who prompted David to take the census? God? (2 Samuel 24) 0r Satan? (1 Chronicles 21)" You know of another source? I'm interested to hear it. It's also enlightening to see how many believers don't care that their source book is filled with errors, inconsistencies, contradictions and even lies. I've heard so many say "If you could prove that any verse in scripture is wrong I would abandon christianity" but when you show them an error they say "It's just a figure of speech."
  • Romans 10:9

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Thats how to obtain salvation; believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.Amen.
