How do we get rockets, satellites, and shuttles into space? Well with Sir Isaac Newton and his laws of motion. Join the HR MacMillan staff for a fun demonstration of Newton's third law of motion with an explosive rocket launch.

  • Many things demonstrate the same principal. A row boat moves in one direction, while the oars move in the opposite direction. The recoil on a rifle would be another example, where the bullet goes in one direction but it also gives force in the opposite direction.

  • It would be interesting to know what fuel that was....

  • How the hell did newton figure this out when there was nothing like this back then?

  • THis is all wrong your wrong thus far?

  • @eagl02 I don't believe it needs another body to react against it, newton's law just states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The rocket provides thrust and as a reaction it moves.

  • How does a shuttle or anything in space move around if newtons third law needs another body to apply equal reaction forces?

In other words how would a rocket work in space? because it has nothing to push against?
