Some barges are 200 foot also. And if that pattern is setup to protect the rudders whoever told u that was full of it. That boat prob drafts between 6 and 8 foot and a empty barge only drafts 1 if u are lucky. So if u struck ground the boat is gonna hit first on the bottom of the river.
@hansheiri2292 the h pattern is 3 barges on each side and 2 in the middle and you slide the middle string up a 100 ft. barges are 200 ft long and 30ft wide and our boat is 120 ft long. since locks down there are 600 ft long, having our barges in the h pattern allows us to take 8 barges at a time and it helps protect the rudder in shallow water going around bends.
@hansheiri2292 the barges were set up in a H pattern, that's a crounse boat so it goes from Green county Alabama to Birmingport on the Black Warrior River. the reason it's set up in a H pattern is because all the chambers in the locks on this river are 600ft long and the river is very narrow and shallow

@shinerun1 yes you are correct. I never can remember the width lol and they are actually 195ft long not 200

i work as a helmsman on a tanker on the rhine river.
we go from holland and belgium with fuel to switzerland.
i never saw an h pattern like that and honestly i still don't quite get it.
