* "An Evening on a Farm Near Dykanka" is the title of a short story by Nikolai Gogol, who is often referred to as the father of modern Russian literature. The idea that he was a "Russian writer," however, is too great a simplification.

Gogol is also known by the Ukrainian version of his name, i.e., Mykola Hohol. Nikolai Gogol / Mykola Hohol was from the Poltava region of Ukraine, and was descended from Ukrainian-speaking Cossack gentry. One of his ancestors was an important Cossack leader who, in the service of Polish King Jan Sobieski's army, helped lift the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683.

Though fluent in both Ukrainian and Russian, Hohol/Gogol wrote in Russian about his Ukrainian homeland. Part of his motivation for writing in Russian was a desire to communicate to the broader, Russian-speaking imperial audience about his homeland.

Hohol/Gogol had a strong sense of his Ukrainian identity, and his stories, though written in Russian, are replete with references to Ukrainian folklore and folk tales. The father of modern Russian literature was a Ukrainian who wrote in Russian in large part about his homeland.

Why not consider SPENDING AN EVENING of Ukrainian culture with us at a little restaurant called Kramarczuk's--the next best thing to an evening at a party on a farm in rural Ukraine!
