I have one of these! Just found out tonight what it is.
-
Yes, I had heard that to. They made old floor fans that ran on Kerosene to, saw one on The Antiques Road Show!
-
@italobambino43 I recall family using such refrigerator in the late '60s yet. Some had ones that burned kerosene still at that time.

@SupernaturalNEWSLTR That practice may be why the icy balls where known to explode. How the icy ball works is differant how absorption cycle refrigerator work & very different from how the compressor driven refrigerators work.
-
@DrDaveBilliards But modern absorption cycle refrigerators use a constant heat source. Having said that I doubt the ivy balls worked with a constant heat source. Comparing how the icy ball to how an absorption refrigerator works would be as invalid as comparing how a compressor driven refrigerator works to the absorption refrigerator operation

@ahmd1431 Ah Islam has become as corrupt as Judaism & Christianity. The world would be better off if none of them ever existed.

My father said that there was a refidgerator that ran on natural gas, I think he said it was made some time in the late 30's or so?
Ever hear of a "rotating heat pipe"?
I saw the patent on this gizmo for use in as an airconditioner.
My Dad tried for a couple of years an airconditoning system that used natural gas in an absortion cycle like the icy ball.
He said that he almost went broke trying to keep it running.

Sounds like a similar idea.

I heard someplace that people would put a very low flame under the outside ball and it would keep the ice box cold without having to take it in and out. Do they still make these? It sounds like this technology could be used in air conditioners and refrigerators.

A constant flame wouldn't work. The pressure must cycle. Modern refrigerators have compressors and evaporators to achieve the effect continuously.
