THE NAMESAKE is the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta to New York evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld to a new world without forgetting the old. Though parents Ashoke and Ashima (Irfan Khan, Tabu) long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, they take great pride in the opportunities their sacrifices have afforded their children. Paradoxically, their son Gogol (Kal Penn) is torn between finding his own unique identity without losing his heritage. Even Gogol's name represents the family's journey into the unknown.

  • such an underrated movie

  • Definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies. I'm Puerto Rican but I feel like anyone can relate to this movie. "Remember that you and I made this journey and went together to a place where there was nowhere left to go."

  • It is really not the story of the son, Gogol, but rather the parents - as they are for whom it is dedicated - and indeed Irfan and Tabu are just perfect, wonderful in this role. Best film ever. And I am Hungarian btw...

  • this book sucks

  • actually max's parents were survivors of a plane crash, and decided to name their daughter "Max" so that she would make the most out of each day. But we're all judgemental aren't we... 0:44

  • tabu is the finest actress. she deserved at least an oscar best actress nomination for this role

  • Great book, great movie.

  • @JordanjamesX Well he certainly is a good actor, and I've seen him in a lot of things. I know he's the star of the show, which is AWESOME! but it just wasn't his best acting in the scene before, other than that, he was perfect in this movie :)

and besides, it doesn't bother me, that it wasn't his best acting in that scene, cause really, he is human, and no one can give 100% all the time :) LOOOOVEEEE Kal Pen! :)

  • @YesILoveMyMusic Well obviously Mira Nair disagrees with you because she cast Kal Penn to be the star of the movie. Kal Penn was impressive in this movie. I think some people just want to typecast Kal as a comedic actor. However, I was personally impressed with the depth of feeling and expression he had in the dramatic scenes inthe movie.

  • the book keeps me awake all the time
