Full explanation here: www.hellsplumber.com/blog

Since the last time I updated this, I've received another email just like the first one.
No text, no sender, just an attached file named "14.zip". I didn't want to open it because of what happened last time, but curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to know what it did and if it corresponded with the dreams I've been having lately.

I opened the file and found it was empty just like the first one, but seeing as "Orange Portal.zip" had given me the same impression in the past I assumed it did SOMETHING. I closed the file and made sure not to delete the email this time. Then all that was left was to play Portal and see if anything had changed.

Clicking "New Game" I wondered if I should do an entire playthrough to see if something had changed, or pick a level to start from. Seeing the test chambers listed like that, and thinking of the number 14 in the file's title made me certain that it was a reference to Test Chamber 14. So, of course, I loaded it up.

I started the level and everything seemed pretty normal. I made sure to test things as I went through the start of the level, but I think I was also procrastinating a little, scared to go further into the test chamber in fear of what might be there. I placed a portal at the top of the level to get there rather than walking as I knew that the stairs are triggered when you get closer to them. I was trying to avoid the triggers I knew of just in case the file had hacked them to trigger other things.
I had no reason to think that, I was just trying to stop anything from happening. My trigger-avoiding was just wasted time, however, as it didn't prevent anything.

Once at the top of the level I found that fucking Companion Cube, this time hovering somehow in mid air. There IS meant to be a cube at that part of the level, but it isn't meant to be a Companion Cube and it DEFINATLY isn't meant to be floating. I tried to pick it up but the Portal Gun just showed its grab animation, as if it was carrying something, but the cube refused to move.
I placed both portals on top of each other on the wall opposite me so I could see if jumping into the cube mario-style had any effect, trying to knock it down. All I managed to do was nudge it a little, and it always defiantly jumped instantly back into place. Still, after a few attempts the cube gave in and let me carry it.

I decided the best thing to do would be to play through the rest of the level, so I carried the cube over to the button. I tried to set the cube down on it to open the door it was linked to but this caused the door to somehow explode and the cube scurried back to where it started. I went to retrieve it and carried it with me through the door that was now stuck in the "open" position. In an attempt to stop it from running away, I let go of the cube in the corner of a room. This DID stop it running back, but instead it climbed high up the wall out of reach. Since there was nothing I could really do, I taunted it by making it run through an infinite portal loop, which would have been impossible if the cube wasn't so eager to escape. After a while of looping through portals, the Companion Cube seemed to speed up it's pace a little before disappearing into thin air. I checked everywhere for it but it really had disappeared. Giving up and having nothing left to do, I moved to the elevator and continued onto the next test chamber.

I played through the next few test chambers and nothing weird happened, so I'm guessing that file just messed around with that one chamber. I've since replayed chamber 14 and everything seems to be back to normal. I've uploaded the recording to Youtube as I did with the first file incase you want to see what happened.

Again, if anything else happens I'll be sure to let you know either on Youtube or www.hellsplumber.com/blog. Thanks a lot for reading all of this.

  • dude, you are an awesome trollmapper

  • @tomatopipps Is trollmapping even a thing? XD

In all honesty, I have no idea why the cube did that or how it's possible, but it was pretty fun to mess around with =]
