A drum solo of Dick Cully recorded by Eddie DeLong, ( a great drummer and a friend) at a event held at Thoroughbred music in Tampa, Florida.
The Un-Signed Drummers contest.
Judges at the front table left to right were: Dave Weckl, John DeChristopher (Ziljian), Jerry Ricci (Long Island Drum Center-National Drum Association), Rod Morgenstein, Marvin "Smitty" Smith and Rick Van Horn (Modern Drummer Magazine).

I didn't win, place or show and didn't care, because I had no use for the awarded equipment prize's because I wouldn't play any of that crap. I gave away my awards but I made three great drumming friends this day including Herb Brochstein.. (Mr. Pro-Mark), Kenny Loomer and Frankie White.

Interesting that Weckl and Van Horn didn't even applaud once for this performance when the audience seemed to truly enjoy it ... Drama..... How To Crush Ones Ego in four minutes by Dick Cully.........

  • Hey Dick, I was there on that day!! That was killer! Marvin Smith and Rod Morgenstein were totally diggin' it!

  • WOW

  • I love your playing man! Excellent!

  • schade, dass manche Leute so eingebilded sind

it´s a pity that some people are so ignorant and conceited

    Like your playing

in spite of all i love weckl´s style

  • Sweet chops!

  • Calling this solo impressive would be an understatement. Your chops and control are amazing, but I can imagine the judges thinking that you gave them only one of the big four categories that they like to see, being groove/timing, independence, musicality/originality, and chops. This is simply my personal philosophy with drumming, so don't take this as me saying that I am the most well-rounded drummer or that I am better than you. I am no where close to either.

  • You play great, the way I strive to play, it makes no difference why a few of the judges didn't applaud, you got your point across, good luck.

  • You play great, the way I strive to play, but unfortunately not on your level. I'd like to see the three who won, I'll bet they used a lot of double bass. Who's knows why Rick Van Horn or Weckle didn't applaud, it really doesn't matter, you got your point across, good luck.

  • Rick Van Horn has nothing to be conceited about. He should have been working at the snack bar at this event. I remember him watching me set a world speed record years ago. Watching and or talking provides no Validity to a drummer's ability whatsoever hence his role and career choice in being a writer is best suited. Dick call me we need to catch up, miss ya love ya.

  • If you were to give Tom Selleck the skills of Buddy Rich and then some, you end up with Dick Cully. He is not Buddy, he is not Gene Krupa nor Louis Bellison, he is a World Class, the one and only Dick Cully. He is a one of a kind thoroughbred drummer. I find his playing very inspiring. I personally do not compare him with anyone as he is unique and has unbelieveable skills.
