This is the first revision of a Bluetooth RC robot using a Nokia E75 smartphone with xyz accelerometers for control. No pulse-width modulation is incorporated at this point, so the robot only has five states: forward, reverse, left, right, and stop.

Major components include the $45 RN-41-SM Bluetooth module (available at Mouser.com), Atmel ATtiny2313 AVR Microcontroller, L298N H-bridge, and a voltage booster (available at Pololu.com). Total cost is around $110.

Code for the microcontroller / smartphone and schematic are available at sourceforge.net/projects/roboticscode/files in the folder named 'Bluetooth Remote Control Tank'. The robot is also easily controlled from a computer terminal program using a keyboard numberpad.

Feel free to subscribe to our channel. Look forward to implementing PWM so the robot can move at rates corresponding to the accelerometer data (ie amount of tilt).

  • Check out the schematic and source code on the sourceforge page (link in description). You will need to download and install PyS602.0.0 and get and AVR programmer. It shouldn't be too hard if you are electronics and programming savvy. See letsmakerobots . com/node/23322 - just ask questions as you go, but don't forget to read the manual first (I mean datasheets, etc). A Bluetooth heli is totally possible although range is limited on the phone side.

  • Hi could you please provide the necessary docs because I am doing the same thing with RN41 but mine is RC car not the tank. I am encountering the problem with the connection between the RN41 and the PIC. Thanks a lot.
