"Vastu Shastra" is an ancient science of architecture, based on five elements of nature (called 'Pancha bhutham' in sanskrit) namely "Fire", "Water", "Air", "Land" and "Space". These five elements of nature is the natural form of different energies. "Vastu (Va-stu)" means that it is "matter" and the stability of matter over different periods of time resulting into prudent positive effects, influenced by "Pancha Bhutham" is the essence of this science.
The "Pancha Bhutham" is required to be in perfect harmony for any building construction to influence positive effects such as general prosperity, abundant wealth, good health and peace of mind etc, for individuals associated with. This science was established for all kinds of building construction such as Home, Workplace, Factories, Temples, etc.
A great ancient Tamil poet by name "THIRU VALLUVAR" has quoted, saying that for an individual or an organization to be very successful with all kinds of prosperity, the place & time of operation or living has to be determined properly in conformance to nature.
The positive or the negative influence, which is based on the placement or the presence of these five elements in any building, is from eight different directions. These eight directions comprises of the basic four directions such as the South, the North, the East and the West. This also includes the four corner directions such as the "North-East", the "North-West", the "South-East" and the "South-West". The five elements are supposed to be present in some prescribed directions, which results in positive effects.
The center portion of any building also has its own significance as the other eight directions.
All the directions are governed/guarded by gods/celestial beings, who in turn govern the respective energy of nature, as stated below.
