California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in this episode of "California Travel Tips."

Millions of tourists pass through the arches of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle, but few take the time to explore this amazing landmark.

Modeled after the magnificent castle Neu Schwanstein in the Bavarian Alps, this beautiful wood-and-stone reproduction debuted with the Anaheim theme park in 1955.

The working drawbridge, surrounded by a moat with friendly ducks, was lowered on opening day and in 1983 during the reopening of Fantasyland.

No detail was spared building Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, from its gold-plated squirrel gargoyles, spires and turrets, to its regal flags, clock chandelier and intricate windows and wooden doors. Look closely on the ground leading to the castle and you'll discover a time capsule buried during the theme parks 40th anniversary.

Above the entrance arches you'll see the Walt Disney family crest. You can look for your own family name in the Castle Heraldry Shop while admiring its Knights of Armor and spiked maces on display.

Inside the castle, a magic crystal boutique entices shoppers, or you can take a closer look at the drawbridge's mechanics.

The castle's namesake is honored with murals from the movie and a bronze drinking fountain featuring Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. In the west hall, you'll discover a display of princess memorabilia, including a cheerful bluebird and Cinderellas glass slipper.

If you explore the eastern path, you'll come upon the tranquil Snow Whites Grotto. This magical spot is the perfect place to make a wish in the wishing well or rest a spell while enjoying a water show, chiming bells and sweet song. The real Snow White often makes appearances here.

Next time you're in the Disneyland theme park, take a closer look at Walt Disney's signature attraction.

  • @xMetalHeadx1 I don't think it's better. You can't beat the original Disneyland, created by Walt himself.

  • Fun Fact: the BACK side of the castle was the original design for the entire thing, but one day Walt walked in on one of his employees who had an idea for remodeling the castle. the employee said it was nothing, but walt loved the idea and he used it for the front but left the old design on the back of the castle, so next time you go through the gate, look behind yourself, and you'll definitely notice the difference between the front and back of the castle
