I think some of the reference is to the crash into the Empire state building in 1936. He just used the word chysler cuz it is a better word and the building is a better image.

He lives blocks from ground zero. It hit him as much as anyone, he didnt play this song live for many years after 9/11.

He's singing about the Chrysler building, not the Twin Towers.
He also said "a man" not "many men"
The song is also about Chicago, not New York.
