  • Amazing ! remember this gig as if it was yesterday . Keighley had such a musical buzz about in then , and a great record shop next to the railway station

  • Yes! Discount Records on the Station Bridge! That was the best Record Shop ever. I wonder what became of Simon, the owner, he was a top man. He sold the business and emigrated to America. Keighley really was the centre of the universe back then. How sad to see how it is now.

  • I heard that Ashley is doing some recording. I not long since managed to get hold of a CD with a few of his more recent songs. Just him and a guitar. I don't know if they were the finished product or just 'Sketches'

    Whatever, they were awesome.

    Great to see this though.

  • Ashley has a rare talent. He gave New Model Army 51st State and they made it their anthem.

A fine singer-songwriter with a wicked, dry wit and a fine voice to match.

Keighley's version of Liverpool's Pete Wylie.

  • Wow! I was at this gig !! they had another guitarist but he's not on this. Anyone know why??

This clip is brilliant but it doesnt do them justice.

Oh to be young again. this lot were really special to me.

  • Silkie,

The other guitarist was Jeff Rowlands. He's still playing locally in a band called So It Goes. Bassist Steve Wilson still plays in The Big Bang, So It Goes and 50Ft Woman. Wayne Marshall was playing in a Blues band last I heard. I believe Ashley is still in Keighley but I'm not aware of him still singing.

    The should have been huge.

  • r i p "Grubby john "

  • Dude where did you get these vids? My Uncle was Jon Mason the drummer, who has sadly just passed away :( I've been trying to find this track for ages, thank you!!!! :)

  • i have the single. also got it transfered to cd. wanna copy? best of keighley bands in the 80"s

  • Did anyone have copies of the single? Lovely to see these clips Graham. Brought back many happy memories of when we kids. Was only nine then!

  • Very nice indeed!

  • I remember sitting in the Albert Hotel in Keighley and listening to Jeff and Steve moaning about how crap it was that Ashley was

looked on as the songwriter. They thought that this was unjust (from what i could gather) seeing as they had as much input songwriting wise...Proof of the pudding is that Ash is still out there writing brilliant songs while Jeff and Steve are in shitty covers bands...What does that tell you?

  • The Shakes were my favourite band. Utterly stunning. Amazing lyrics, wonderful tunes. It is so sad that the members of this phenomenal band are now wasting their time in 'covers' bands and club groups. All that potential wasted...all that promise betrayed.

Excuse me while i go and weep.

At Least Ashley has remained true.

I remember him saying 'Caesar or Nothing'

What a Hero. The Band have plumped for Nothing.

    Club group shits!! Betrayers!!
