French title meaning Strangers on the Earth, hints at things foreign for most of us. A classic movie theme is the adventure and romance of traveling or experiencing a foreign exotic land, people, culture; So our stars only emerge in the last third of this video, mostly Ava (that's her at 4:58 in the sari!) and Grace.

Movies include Mogambo (1953, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Clark Gable), Elephant Walk (1954, Elizabeth Taylor, Dana Andrews), Bhowani Junction (1956, Ava Gardner, Stewart Granger, The African Queen (1951, Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart), Green Fire (1954, Grace Kelly, Stewart Granger), Fitzcarraldo (1982, Claudia Cardinale, Klaus Kinski), Out of Africa (1985, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford), and some scenes out of Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Credits are unlisted (which I usually list) since the stars are small players in our larger world.

Music in order: Ennio Morricone, starting with the rarely heard Secret of the Sahara, Vita nostra (from The Mission), short excerpt from Climb (from The MIssion), and finally John Barry's Dances with Wolves Theme.

Finally, today we generally view our world quite differently from when some of these older classics were filmed; they take a western-centric view. Just enjoy the moment.

  • it's magnificent beautiful job

  • Hi there! merci beaucoup et félicitations pour cette superbe vidéo!!! everything is perfect : the music, the movies outtakes and the quotes!!!

  • I like the title in french that you gave to this video and of cours the clip! By the way, your title in french is translated perflectly. If you said "étrangers sur terre" is less poetic than "étrangers sur [la] terre"

    see you

  • This video is spectacular.

The rising of the sun, untouched nature, the great adventure films such as Mogambo and beautiful music make your work fascinating!!

  • Cool idea for a video, Doug. Claudia's smile at 7:14 is priceless. I also like Katharine Hepburn. And Ava looks utterly fierce in Bhowani Junction. This makes me want to see that movie again! Thanks for sharing, Doug.
