James Brown is the centerpiece of the new documentary SOUL POWER, which hits NY and LA on July 10. In this exclusive clip, JB and Horny Horns trombonist Fred Wesley reflects backstage at the Silverdocs Film Festival on the years he spent as musical director for the great James Brown, specifically their 1974 performance in Zaire, which forms the centerpiece director Jeffrey Levy-Hinte's film. Compiled from footage originally captured by Leon Gast and crew during the Ali-Foreman fight (which also formed the basis of the Oscar winning doc WHEN WE WERE KINGS), Soul Power features a treasure trove of previously unseen footage from some of the top R&B and World Music acts of the 1970s . Visit www.soulpowerfilm.com for more details. Visit www.funkyfredwesley.com for tour dates and info on his autobiography, HIT ME FRED, which is available through Amazon.com Soul Power in Philadelphia on July 31 Ritz Bourse theater.

  • Fellow funk-a-teers - Do yourselves a favor. Get yo' azz to NYC in Sept. 2011 to celebrate Pee Wee Ellis birthday with an original JBs reunion including Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. Tickets may have already sold out.

  • I fucking love Fred Wesley. The funkiest of the JB Horns!!

Sorry Maceo, I love you too :D

  • This brotha needs to lose weight so that he could hopefully extend his life. that overweight mess brings other health problems and can make you kick the bucket. Stay healthy bro!

  • what a privilege to see you, a legend (to me), in NYC in the spring of 2009. I had to take (almost manu-militari) mu hubby off your bus. Thank you for the music, but mostly for your heart. khadija Boyd
