never found a problem with the original music and story with minor allterations.
Also, this production has a few legal problems. it likely wouldnt count as a paroody because our copying the music of copyrighted music and adding your own lyrics, probably without permission.

I guess you're right. Seeing it again it's not to bad.

Actually everyone in the show watched the entire opperetta numerous times to be able to rewrite it. Honestly, if it makes it accessible to another generation of audiences has the rewrite not done it's job?
I understand being enraged that something has been rewritten but why take offense at something as harmless as a high school play when there are other higher places that rewrite things all the time for entertainment and no one comments like that on their work?

How could anyone butcher a time-honored operetta like The Mikado? I bet that less then a quarter of the people in this video even know the original.
I think I'm going to vomit. Where's the social commentary? Where's the satire? Why take G&S and reduce it to pop entertainment? Whoever wrote this should be ashamed. Whoever performed in it should have a serious look at their ethics. This is the opposite of what G&S had in mind, and I couldn't be more disgusted.

i think that you should be ashamed of trashing a highschool play. the students worked hard to rewrite, reherse and perform this within 6 weeks. and in a place where they are proud of even being entertaining, this was a huge success.
im not going to call you names, but that was a very ignorant statement. no matter how you feel the origional mikado should have been performed. but thanks.

Insofar as the students working hard to rewrite, rehearse, and perform this--you are right. I'm sure it was entertaining and I applaud their work.
My point is, that work should never have been done. Why not do the Mikado as G&S intended? Adapatations are great, but this is a slap in the face. All performers, regardless of age or experience, should have standards and ethics. There are ways to be entertaining, without being disrespectful.

im sorry you were offended. but i've seen professional versions of the mikado on youtube that couldn't be less about social comentary. not everyone thinks that this is a highly inelectual comentary on japanese culture.
the mikado, without the focus on political comentary is a great show that many audiences can enjoy. i suppose it is all based on opinion. but if i am wrong, please let me know.

The Mikado wasn't a commentary on Japanese culture. The whole Japanese backdrop was a veil to disguise the true intent: the satire of the British monarchy. But regardless, you're right. It is highly entertaining and enjoyable. My original point was that I think it's going too far to take such poetic license that you change entire songs simply for the sake of entertainment.
Bottom line--you're right. Everyone has a different opinion. That's what makes art interesting, no? =)
