Polar Star was release for the MSX by Microcabin in 1984.

Microcabin gained fame with games like Xak, Illusion City, Urusei Yatsura and (Super) Daisenryaku but this early shooter is largely unknown.

The object of the game is to destroy an enormous fortress that appears over the horizon. You must however cross a certain distance to reach the fortress, once you have done that your primary weapon will start loading and in the meantime you can not fire a single shot.

In this clip only level one is played. But in later levels of course the distances become longer and the enemies more numerous and cunning.

This is a nice and fun shooter to play in my opinion. I especially like it when the fortress appears on the horizon.

You are welcome. It is still a fun game to play these days just like it was back then. I am glad I could give you this nostalgia shot.

  • This brings back childhood memories. Playing this game on my old Sony MSX1. Took about an hour to load from a tapedrive. But it sure was fun :)

  • @SandsOfArrakis

It was indeed a great and fun game to play. I played it for many hours. Luckily I had it on disk :)

  • I used to have this game too - think I got to level 7 once, its a really great arcade shoot em-up - real MSX classic

Thanks for your comment. Indeed a real MSX classic, although an underrated one. I think it is time for a PC remake. Any programmers out there to take the challenge?

  • @physcopanda1977 Well I was thinking about a C64 remake - anyone know who owns the rights?

Thanks for your reply. When I first played it two decades ago that final stage was always nerve wrecking. I hadn't played it for years when I recorded this. But I admit, even in better days it always took me a few shots before I hit it. Although at least once I got a 'hole in one'. It is still exciting to play this game.

I am glad you liked it.

  • awesomes! took you a while to hit the boss :op ah seeing this game has made my day

  • Yes, a company has to start somewhere. This one of their earliest games.

I like the landscape too, especially the pyramids. Notice that their is one upside down. :)

In this game you can actually shoot your enemy without seeing him.
