Well, there's that and the fact she was the first model for Vanity Fair, worked with many pioneering fashion photographs such as Richard Avedon (not to mention her husband Ferdinand Fonssagrives). Couture is an elegant, sophisticated look for aristocrats. Lisa exuded the image of a lady. Unfortunately, in today's world it would be considered snooty. Her career brought Chanel, Lanvin, Worth, Pucci, Gucci, etc. into the feminine culture of 1930's and 1940's America to redefine dress style.
....Lisa studied Modern Dance so when asked by a photographer to create something new to make the photograph spectular (all photographers she worked with created gorgeous black and white photographs) she used her dance training! Unfortunately, it seems like the connection between Lisa and the classic poses in couture modeling is lost on today's young modeling generation. There aren't alot of people who know who Lisa was. If they did then meaning of of "supermodel" would have her name in it.
If Janice is the world's first supermodel, does she mean she is the world's first supermodel according to the 1970's new definition that she created? I know Lisa Fonssagrives is considered the first supermodel (I admire her) and I think she was. She had more than 200 covers of Vogue and created the couture genre of modeling. I knew there was something special about couture...the moves and poses are similar to Modern Dance. "Contract" is in couture modeling....
