Segundo Barrio El Paso, TX

Drive through El Paso's 79901 "Segundo Barrio" This Primarily Chicano/ Mexican American neighborhood at one time was the poorest zip code in the entire United States. In the early 1990's this neighborhood was heavily populated with gangs and was a very dangerous area for outsiders. This drive starts on the 375 freeway (Border Highway) where you can look across the Rio Grande river into Cuidad (Don Benito) Juarez, Chihuahua Mexico. Turning off the 375 freeway North on Park street then west on 8th street which is seperated by a narrow long park that at one time was a canal. This area is rich in deep history and the residents are very proud to call this area home. The people are good hard working Americans just making a living. Several acres of Segundo Barrio were lost to Mexico when then President Lyndon B. Johnson introduced the American-Mexican Chamizal Convention Act of 1964; Many of the older residents of Segundo Barrio can still recall having to relocate from the area that would soon become a part of Cuidad Juarez-Mexico.

What is the point of this? This area is not a violent area! I have lived my entire 34 years in El Paso and passed through here morning and middle of the night my whole life, there is no violence, El Paso is one of the safest places to live in the world, and there is not one single place in this entire area from far west El Paso all the way through to the east side and outer areas that I would not be one second afraid to walk or drive or sit on a bench and relax and enjoy the area, and I amWhite

It no longer is a dangerous area; It's a historic neighborhood filled with people of all races primarily Mexican American, and has quite a collection of beautifull murals and is rich in history. It's not a violent area...
