Update: Synthesia for iPad is now available on the Apple AppStore.
I tried using it without buying the camera connection kit and it worked! My keyboard is connected to my laptop which is running an app called Pianoteq for excellent sound. Synthesia for iPad is communicating to my laptop wirelessly via the app called rtpmidi also running on the laptop.
The take home lesson here is that I don't need to buy a camera connection kit and I'm able to use one of the best piano sound modelling software out there and also reroute the sound to a high end surround sound equipment.
