The cell membrane is a translucent pliable skin which controls the flow of materials into and out of the cell. A highly complex unit, it is composed of a double layer of fat molecules sandwiched between two layers of protein molecules. The exact molecular structure of the cell membrane is still unknown, but this diagrammatic model shows what is thought to be the relationship of carbohydrates with protein, water and fat molecules.

  • its not totally surrounded by two layers of proteins because that would cause it to dissolve in water!

  • Cholesterol Maintains the Integrity of the Cell Membrane

Surrounding each of our cells is a membrane called the plasma membrane. The plasma membrane is a continuous double-layer of phospholipids, interweaved with cholesterol and proteins. Phospholipids are composed of two fatty acids attached to a phosphate compound as a head.

The phosphate head is water-soluble, also called "hydrophilic" (water-loving), and the fatty-acids are water-insoluble, or "hydrophobic" (water-fearing).

  • This model is completely wrong!!!!

  • Cell Walls are covered in protective Cholesterol Wax, Cholesteral is a sterol (a combination steroid and alcohol), a lipid found in the cell membranes of all body tissues,Eating / Drinking essential food oil / / cod liver / fish oil / with omega 3 may keep the wax preventing cell death, i do know that if a person where able to somehow feed the cell wall and prevent if from bursting , it would prolong our lives ?

  • Cholesterol is Abundant in Cell Membranes

Cholesterol is found in every cell of your body. It is especially abundant in the membranes of these cells, where it helps maintain the integrity of these membranes, and plays a role in facilitating cell signaling-- meaning the ability of your cells to communicate with each other so you function as a human, rather than a pile of cells.

Molecule for molecule, cholesterol can make up nearly half of the cell membrane.

  • Wow! This is so incredibly wrong. Get rid of it! The "sandwich" model was popular from the late 1800's to about the 1940's. IT IS COMPLETELY WRONG! Search "Fluid mosaic model" on google or youtube to see what is known to be right.

  • Soooooooooo wrong, remove this crap at once!!

  • Lösung ist Bestwater

  • this video is a pile of wank, get your facts right mate.

  • need to elaborate man

  • thank you for this

  • water is not on the inside, the inside fatty tails are hydrophobic. There are many more proteins involved in the membrane as well for active and passive transport.

  • Es el modelo de Sandwich, que ya fue descartado desde hace mucho, ahora es el de mosaico fluido, de hecho más fluido que mosaico (2006)

  • if this is wrong, what bio did you learn???

  • not that much info
