Bed Of Ashes:
It was dark.
Cold,
Lonely,
Empty,
The only light came from the street lamp at the corner of the old willow pike church and the lone star hotel. Shadows stretched along the graffiti covered walls, dancing and chasing one another. In the distance you could hear the rhythm of near by cars splashing through the puddles left by the rain from the night before. The smell of stale pizza rode the crisp fall air dragging with it dead leafs. The leafs scattered being dragged to dark places, places where they would never be seen again.
Nick slowly exhaled letting out a cloud of breath that haloed his head. He sat next to the dumpster hidden. Nick's chin rested on his knees while his arms were wrapped tightly around his legs pulling them close to his body. Even though Nick couldn't see him, he knew he was there. He could hear Joe's heavy steps echoing off the ally walls. He saw the glow of Joe's cigarette floating in the air before he saw him.
Joe dropped his cigarette on the ground and stamped it out with his shoe. Nick looked up from the crushed butt and up at Joe. Joe's eyes were blood shot and his usual smooth face had stubble. Nick studied Joe's face, he looked exhausted.
Joe: what are you doing?
Nick did his best to swallow to moisten his dry mouth. Before he could even try to answer a pair of head lights pulled into the ally. Nick stuck his head out from behind the dumpster and squinted into the blinding lights.
-
Nick's head shot up and he drew in a deep breath. Another dream. Nick rubbed his forehead and placed his elbows on the steel table resting his head in his palms. The room was quite, so quiet he could hear the second hand of the clock ticking and the humming of the large overhead lights. Nick was nervous, he had never been in a police station before, he had never killed anyone either, until that night.
Detective Jack Duncan opened the door letting noise from the outside world travel in, but only for a moment. He closed the door and sat down at the long table setting down his coffee and the case file. Nicks file. Nicks brown eyes darted from the brown folder and then to Detective Duncan. Nick chewed on his fingernails, a nervous habit he picked up when he was afraid.
Duncan: Hi Nick. I'm Detective Duncan, but you can call me Jack. Okay?
Nick nodded in response, he didn't want to say something stupid. In fact he didn't want to say any thing at all. Nick didn't like the way Duncan looked at him, he didn't like that he was trapped. On Nicks left there was a two way mirror, he felt like he was on display.
Detective Duncan observed. He watched how Nick's eyes darted back and forth scanning the room. After reading the file Duncan knew that Nick was 15, He attended Still River High school and was on the honor roll. He also knew that Nick wasn't involved in sports and lived with his parents on 423 west end drive. The most important information that Duncan got from the case file was that Nick had been reported kidnapped for ransom three days ago, and was being charged in the murder of Joseph Davies.
Nicholas Jonas didn't look like a killer. He looked like a scared kid. His sleeves were pulled tightly over his wrists and his jacket was tightly zipped. He looked exhausted and fresh bruises were just taking life on his left cheek bone and his right eye. Duncan looked into Nick's eyes. They were tiered and sunken in, dark circles outlining his wandering eyes. Duncan had seen so many criminals in his years on the force and it was hard to believe the boy sitting in front of him was a cold blooded murder.
Duncan: We can talk about it.
Nick knew he needed a lawyer, he knew he had rights. That didn't matter. A lawyer couldn't bring Joe back. Nothing could. The only thing that could do that would be time. The funny thing about time is, it doesn't stop, and it never plays in reverse.
Nick: Do you believe in fairy tales?
AHHH!!! I cant believe that nick killedJoe!! Im soo excited
