Sri Lanka has emphasised to the US Congress that it had not flouted international humanitarian law during the conflict with the terrorists.
The Foreign Ministry was responding to a dossier presented to the US Congress which had detailed incidents that allegedly occurred during the last stage of the humanitarian operations. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry emphasised that the Sri Lankan Government had not transgressed international humanitarian laws or committed crimes against humanity.
It underscored that the US report on Sri Lanka presented to the US Congress is unsubstantiated and devoid of corroborative evidence. The Sri Lankan troops unleashed the operations with responsibility and sans harming any civilian. The operations drew to an end after totally routing LTTE terrorism. The Foreign Ministry noted that there is a track record of vested interests endeavouring to bring the Government of Sri Lanka into disrepute through fabricated allegations and concocted reports. Their hope is to once again fan the flames of secessionism and to undo concerted efforts of the Government. Therefore, the Ministry release added that the people of Sri Lanka had every reason to be concerned that this report may be abused for a similar end.
