On April 5, 2011, here is how I changed the lithium battery in a 2006 Toyota Prius keyless remote (yes, it has a hidden emergency key inside). I purchased two lithium batteries (CR2032) at the jewelry counter at my local Walmart for $5.88, and changed the batteries in both remotes. They work great again!

  • Earlier Comment by CHOZENProductions is valid: "Once you have the key removed, flip the fob to the side without the buttons. Push the same tab all the way to right and at the same time push the cover off using the ridge above the Toyota logo. It is designed to slide out - with the tab pushed ALL the way. After changing the battery - the cover goes back on the same way." So, if you have sufficient hand strength, looks like you can open it with bare hands.

  • What I really appreciate about your video is, you did not edit it. You kept the camera going : ) It looks real easy even with little mistakes. I am ready to change my battery! Thank you SO much : )

  • Yet more thanks. Easy when you know how, hey?

  • Everything is great. But instead of Knife, I used a medium tip screw driver. It is less likely to cause an accident and it works better. Requires little bit of playing to pop the tab out and slide the cover, so a sharp knife might slide and cut your fingers.

Although looks like some models, the cover just slides out, as you pull back the tab. Mine was 2008 and took a bit of playing around to pull the cover off

  • Thank you!!!

  • Thank you so much for showing the trick of using a knife blade to pry the unit while sliding the slide at the top! I had read the instructions in the Prius manual on how to open the key unit, but when I tried to perform those instructions, I couldn't get the cover off. It seemed that the cover was stuck. The instructions in the manual didn't explain how and where to pry the unit open if the cover is stuck and won't open the way it is supposed to. But your method worked great!

  • Thanks... helped a lot... :)

  • @discpl4yer Not on mine (5 years later). It does not slide at all so the knife or equivalent will be used.

  • Thank you a million times.

  • No need to use the knife to remove back cover. It slips off when moving the slide at top. Great video! Thanks
