@fbreza gustavthinks' point is that while elections may have been democratic, as soon as Hamas gained power that democracy went down the toilet and was replaced by a totalitatian, terroristic, brutal regime. Hamas has done no favors for the people of Gaza and actually was responsible for many of their deaths.
From the first moment Hamas took over the Gaza strip, democracy in Gaza was terminated and replaced by a terrorist dictatorship. Hamas upholds its totalitarian reign with a deadly iron fist: arresting, beating, torturing, injuring and killing suspected political activists in Gaza. Many Fattah (The organization of president Abbas) members in Gaza, along with their families, were murdered by Hamas armed forces, and only a few of them managed to escape the Gaza strip.

Unfortunately what Gustavthinks isn't worth the time.
Taken from the BBC on 26th Jan 2006:
"Hamas sweeps to election victory
Islamic militant group Hamas has won a surprise victory in Wednesday's Palestinian parliamentary elections.
Preliminary results give Hamas 76 of the 132 seats in the chamber, with the ruling Fatah party trailing on 43."
