Shebeg shemor is one of the best-known songs by the great Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan. The tune is played twice through- the "verse" twice, then the refrain, then the verse only once, and finally a variation of the refrain. Norman and Nancy Blake played it the first way, but most dulcimer players play it the second way; and I don't know which is the original O'Carolan version (or the closest to it.) The mountain dulcimer was made in 1989 by McSpadden to be first prize in the National Mountain Dulcimer Competition in Winfield, Kanas, and is an FM12-kk Custom made of koa wood. btw: McSpadden makes very, very, excellent instruments. It is a right-handed dulcimer but I play it left-handed.

  • Thank you for your comment! A regular, or right-handed, dulcimer has the bass string on the right, but a right-handed guitar has the TREBLE string on the right, and its bass string on the LEFT. So in short, left-handed picking on the dulcimer came naturally, since the instrument is 'made for it'. Also, I hope someday someone might be inspired to play the dulcimer, maybe someone who thought they never could, because they were a leftie, so will try and post more left-handed music soon.

  • how did you learn to play it? I would love to learn it myself.

  • Really intresting to hear this on a dulcimer. Lovely and mellow.

  • Lovely playing and lovely instrument. Who is the maker?

  • This is delightful.

  • Good version. I like your dulcimer playing.

  • Very good arrangement. The picks give it a nice ring. Thanks, Gary

  • This is beautiful!!

  • one hand looks pianistic in playing style forming the chords, while the other sometimes, to me, resembles the banjo picking sound and style !

I was looking actually for a piano solo of the song, but stumbled on this dulcimer, which has a pleasant sound, playing it.

Thanks for fun listen to a great ol' folk tune! I enjoyed it. Cheers! Tommy

  • @Dulcimerea I know it's been a long time since this comment, but I must thank you for it--it's exactly what I was looking for. I'm not left-handed, but I'm currently writing a story with a left-handed character that plays a dulcimer, so I was trying to figure out how that'd work out. Thank you!
