Ann describes her life's struggles due to undetected vision problems. At age 45 she was able to read at a 3rd grade level. After she is diagnosed with oculomotor and visual perceptual problems and completes 6 months of therapy she now reads at a 12th grade level! She wants other children to have proper diagnosis and treatment so they can go to college and have rewarding careers. Her husband, Dr. Filips has opened a Vision Therapy clinic in Hartington and Creighton Nebraska www.FilipsEyeClinic.com to serve these children. (Watch for the cat!)

  • I am in my third year of college, and I still avoid almost all reading as much as I can. I get good grades because I manipulate my way into learning things and skirt around a lot of classwork. I was just diagnosed with this problem a few days ago and I'm excited to start working on my own vision! I am so sorry that you didn't get this diagnosed earlier in your life, but I am so excited that you could improve so dramatically. Thank you for sharing this, and for using your story to help others. :)

  • Thank you Ann for letting people know about this disorder. My son is in 11th grade and has been in special ed since 2nd grade. He is on a 5th grade reading level. He was recently diagnosed with CI and has started therapy. I agree that "no child left behind" should include this testing for any child who is struggling. If it weren't for a friend of mine telling me about this, we may have never known. Thank you for sharing!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this! It is something I really needed to hear. I'm so proud of you for not giving up & making this positive change.

  • Ann, thank you for making this video. I'm sorry to hear how frustrating reading has been for you over the years, and am thrilled that you got the help you needed. You are wonderful so share this information with others!!

  • Oh Ann the only way I can read is by reading part of 3-4 different books at the same time. I can never read just one to the end because it takes me 3 months to read one. And yes it's become work! So all I do is study books and never remember anyways what I read. I must read over and over and over--the slowest reader in the world and I am a writer.. My eyes I never knew were connected to all this...and I feel blind as a bat these days. If this can work hallalujah!
