I remember the outcry this sparked when Ford first did it. Interestingly, over the years even a number of Nixon haters agreed it was the right thing to do and probably saved this nation from the travesty of a show trial.

What a statesman. He knew full well that this would destroy his chance for re-election but he did it anyway. Ford knew that the nation had to move on. We had to heal. Ford put the nation's unity over his own re-election. We need more politicians like him who are willing to sacrifice.
