This book is a fun read, and one can tell the author had fun writing it. But there is a serious and even frightening undercurrent here as well. Senator Stevens is a convincing anti-hero, full of sincere intentions, but all too willing to sacrifice the basic freedoms that Americans have come to take for granted. Are we better off free and vulnerable or constrained and secure? A tough call, but something that must be examined both in serious commentary and in fiction such as this.
