This is a section of a production I was in for National Geographic US. The production is called the Medieval Fight Book and is covering the contents of the HansTalhoffer manual.

  • Firstly, this was not an arrow penetration test with a heavy weight bow. It was to emulate how an archer would have defended this building against this Knight. This was a historical program created by National Geographic US.

Secondly, as this is a film production and we were not trying to kill anyone we used blunts, you would have to be an IDIOT to shoot a 100+ warbow with any bodkins at the knight...

Would you have shot 100+ Warbow and Armour Piecing Bodkins??

  • hah look at that depiction at the end, with all the guys walking up to the castle in the oversized thimbles! genius!

  • this was the program done with john clements, and i hear with mike loades as well?

  • @ponyboy314 Of course, I know too well about that, as I said, I'm a warbow enthusiast myself ;). On first impression I was just not sure what these tests here would have been useful for, but that was before I watched the full medieval fightbook video.

  • What this indicates is not that a knight was safe from arrows. Far from it, actually. This showed that a knight carrying a siege bomb to destroy a castle wall was instead very vulnerable. With a powerful Welsh longbow, armor could sometime be penetrated at the range shown, with the right bodkin arrowhead. Any of those shots that struck the knight might have penetrated.

  • @BarebowBen No, of course not, I shoot warbows myself, I know what they can do. My point was just that I didn't understand what you were doing these shots for then. However, after watching your video with Mike Loades (very interesting by the way), I am more enlightened about the concerned topic :). Sorry to have bothered you.

  • Lol? This is not a real 100lb+ warbow, and the arrows are rubber blunt tipped. What are these tests supposed to be useful for? If there had been a real warbow shot with heavy bodkin arrows, this armoured guy would have been dead instantly (as I don't think this armour he wears is made to old standards)...
