If I learn just the rest of the ABC's signed, although slow, for an avg. person, would that be OK to at least communicate?

Not really, ASL has its own vocabulary (signs) for each word. Fingerspelling is used for telling names or places mostly.
Fingerspelling every single letter of every single word is tiring and not clear.
It's a good start, but in order to communicate in ASL you need to add more vocab and learn the grammatical structure of the language (the order of the words is not the same that English)
