Could London Dreams be the second big hit for Salman this year after Wanted?
'London Dreams' is the story of two childhood friends Mannu and Arjun. Arjun, a singer played by Ajay Devgan is ambitious, focused and his life is consumed by a passionate drive to get on stage and realize his grandfathers unfulfilled dream, to perform successfully at the Wembley stadium. Whereas Mannu has little interest in his music-tutor fathers profession and is a juvenile at heart with no higher ambition than enjoying every moment of life. Arjun ends up in London and works his way up from the streets to forge a band London Dreams with Zoheb and Wasim, two brothers from Wasim.
Meanwhile, far away in Punjab, music becomes a survival tool for Mannu, who takes to playing in wedding bands in his village. Arjun brings Mannu to London to become a part of his band. But he soon regrets doing so. Mannu, has music in his blood. An inherent gift. And his irreverent, rockstar style of performing, catapults him to stardom overnight. He becomes an instant hit with the crowds. What took Arjun years to achieve, Mannu does in only a few days. From here starts a heart-wrenching story of ego, friendship & love and is a sheer delight to watch.
Director Vipul Shah had impressed everybody right from his first directorial venture 'Aankhen', which was among the 5 biggest hit of 2002. His other movies like 'Waqt: The Race Against Time' and 'Namastey London' also achieved success at the box-office. But it would not be an exaggeration to say that London Dreams is his finest attempt at storytelling so far. He paints a vivid picture of London, jealousy, competition and human interaction. He gets fine performances out of his leads. He does well. Well done Vipul!
Salman Khan as Mannu is a happy-go-lucky yokel. Talented but lazy. He loves women, wine and of course song. He's a true foil to Ajay. Salman is a total scene-stealer in this film with some ridiculously funny lines. Only Salman can say stuff like 'yeh nathni kaan mein kyun pehni hai' to a guy with a ear-stud, with a straight face. It's one of his finest performances as a lovable rascal, though he still lacks the punch in a few weepy scenes. But his chemistry with Asin is a treat. Watch this one for Sallu bhai.
Ajay Devgan as Arjun is intense. He's done a good job as the brooding, almost grey personality, who wants to be brutal on the way to success, yet is burdened by guilt and consuumed by jealousy. Ajay does what he's best at, and he does it well. An intense, burning man with a goal to win - at any cost. He's the 'Jai' to Salman's 'Veeru'-like character. And it works well.
Asin as Priya continues to surprise. She plays a conservative Iyer brahmin girl, long-hair and salwar-kameez clad; weaned on Carnatic music and Bharatnatyam, but whose heart secretly yearns for hip-hop and rock. And she wears her min skirts and pendants on the quiet. Asin is a talented actress and she rocks in the romantic, flirtatious scenes. She is cute and makes her presence felt. This girl will go a long way if she continues in this vein.
Cinematographer Sejal Shah has been able to capture some beautifull locations of London, Paris and not to forget Wembley stadium, London like never before. Breathtakingly beautiful.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have successfully tried to move away from their style and try something different with the music of 'London Dreams'. It's pure rock. The album contains eight songs. Lyrics by Prasoon Joshi are simple and words close to the heart. Songs like 'Khanabadosh & Man ko ati bhavey are already at top of the music charts. But my favourite is Barso re sung by Vishal Dadlani and Roop Kumar Rathod.
'London Dreams' is a well crafted movie. A bit long in parts and lacking emotional punch in parts. But it is a delightful attempt to capture jealously, friendship and success - the scale is impressive and the stars take it to another level. Its just a stretch at times. But it deserves an A for effort.
