Review - Halo: Combat Evolved

In this review, I take a look at the now legendary Xbox hit and its PC port.

ESRB Rating: Mature (17+) - Blood and Gore, Violence

Footage is of the PC demo (can't record the Xbox version at this time), high detail at 800x600 resolution (altering the graphics settings caused it to crash).

To clarify my review scores (they're "rough" scores, meaning it's not supposed to be some sort of percentage or anything):
1 or lower = Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
1.5 = Has a few redeeming qualities, but still sucks and should be avoided.
2 = Mediocre (Sub-par). You'll probably want to avoid this one.
2.5 = Underwhelming, but playable.
3 = Average. Worth playing, but probably not at full price.
3.5 = Good, but has issues.
4 = Excellent, but has a few problems that could probably be fixed through patching.
4.5 = Exceptional. Better than 4 but still has a few problems that could be ironed out.
5 = Outstanding. Stuff in this category is pretty much "must own."

The multiplayer still has a huge following on the pc (Xbox didn't have any), with zombie and cops and robbers game modes on the server playlists. The story was (to me at least) original, and it's twists and turns are still memorable to this day. All the halo games I have ever played (1,3,odst,reach) would appear on my top 20 favourite games list. It's a shame that they wouldn't on yours :(

The series got progressively worse for me until it hit Reach, and this one's merely average (not particularly good, but nor is it particularly bad), so no, none of the Halo games would be in my top 20 (or even top 50, if I think about it).

I thought the plot was rather weak, actually.

This review summed up how I felt about the game on PC too. One thing I was underwhelmed by on the PC version was the lack of multiplayer co-op. They had that on the xbox. I guess they never patched the PC version to include it, although there are possibly mods to accomplish this gameplay mode?

I've only played this on PC, so I can't speak for the console version, but the review is pretty much spot on when it comes to describing my experience with it. It was reasonably fun to play, but there was absolutely nothing new or spectacular about it. The only thing I really liked about it was Cortana, but it's not as if the idea of an AI ship's avatar was new either.

I barely managed to complete the campaign as well, but that was mostly from the endgame being pretty frustrating on Xbox. Contending with the aim assist and clunky aiming just got irritating and I kept making mistakes because of it.

Ironically, I despised what I've played of Halo 2 and 3's campaigns. Sure, the Flood were annoying, but H2/3's storylines were pathetic and the gameplay made me feel like I was just trudging through the swamp, so to speak.
