This is a short demonstration song of mine featuring the SQ8L from Rainer Buchty and Siegfried Kullmann.

The SQ8L is a freeware VSTi Plug-In that emulates the Ensoniq SQ-80 Synthesizer (which is more or less the bigger brother of the ESQ-1 / ESQm). The "L" stands for light. There will be a more enhanced version available (probably by the end of 2009) called SQ8X. The "X" stands for eXtended. But that version will not be for free.

The loop was composed in FL Studio 8 using three instances of the SQ8L.

You can hear the following preset patches:

A 001 Brassy
A 072 AM Bel
A 104 Syn, R

Besides the internal effects of FL Studio 8 (compressor on the drums, delay, reverb etc.) the freeware reverb epicVerb (Version 1.0.1, from VARIETY OF SOUND) was used on the high string sound.

The drums are samples from my own library.

A few years ago I read that professional producers connect two compressors in serial (!) to get a fatter sound. I used this trick on the Roland MT32 snare drum sample to make it sound more punchy.

Please add "&fmt=35" to the URL for better audio quality (without the quotation marks).

The sound of the video is slightly distorted (even in HQ mode) which seems to be a result of the conversion by YouTube from .wmv into .mp4. I deleted the video and uploaded it a second time but the result was the same. The original video does NOT sound distorted at all. Sorry, folks.

If anyone knows how to solve that problem, please send me a message. Thanks in advance.

  • Does anyone know how to decrease the notes attack?

  • @br17457 On the latest version (0.91b) just press one of the four ENV buttons (depending on which of the envelopes you want to edit) and change the parameter called T1. Example: For patch c057 you have to set T1 of ENV4 from its preset value 09 to a value around 35 or bigger. Pressing the ENV buttons two times in a role switches between the two envelope edit pages of the green-lighted display. The first page shows TIMEs and LEVELs, the second one shows additional parameters like SHAPE etc.

  • I didn't hear a bit of distortion. It sounded quite pleasant and wonderful to the ears. Great job!!

  • @chrishooper68 Thank you! It's just a very slight distortion. You can hear it by using headphones.

  • die drumsamples sind ziemlich ziemlich nice. gibts irgendwie ne möglichkeit da dranzukommen?

    meine versuche mit sq8l:

    /watch?v=B-EdPuNeu70

ich würde mich über antwort freuen :)

  • If anyone else is interested in getting drum samples from the MT-32 (and a lot of other machines) I recommend to google for "drum samples kb6".

  • @m4ladroid That is quite unnecessary as the manual of the Ensoniq SQ-80 is available as a .pdf-file on the internet (220 pages strong!). I'm gonna send you a personal message with the link.

  • I downloaded that SQ8L vst, loads of useable sounds, very retro some freeware vst instruments are better than what you expect.

  • @sauermusicDE -- You're quite welcome. I actually had my headphones on while trying to listen for the distortion, and I just for the life of me can't hear any. LOL

    Either way, awesome going!

  • I see knobs on the software but not the hardware hmmm :P
