Clarence Dickinson (1873-1969) was one of the most influential figures in American church music in the first half of the twentieth century. He served as organist-choirmaster at Brick Presbyterian Church in New York city for over fity years and was founding director of the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary and a founding member of The American Guild of Organists. As a composer, he was a master of form, counterpoint, and heartfelt melody. "Andante Serioso" dates from 1917, and is dedicated to Dickinson's teacher, Louis Vierne. It is played here by Lorenz Maycher on the 1968 Aeolian-Skinner organ at First-Trinity Presbyterian Church in Laurel, Mississippi, an organ designed and tonally finished by Roy Perry. This track is from the CD "The Aeolian-Skinner Legacy, Volume V," available from www.vermontorganacademy.com
