This was an attempt to determine, on the fly, how compression affects engine performance. The idle picked up simply due to the cable slipping on the rubber band holding the throttle in place. Yes, crude, but too busy to make something more sophisticated. The idle was steady at 3K.

At any rate, note the smoke at pick up. Still, transition was quite good. Note as we increase the compression, RPMs pick up.

The prop used is the same as that used for the diesel runs, a Grish 10 X 4 black Tornado. This was done to make direct comparison between glow and diesel. The engine started and ran with no change in the needle settings. Fuel was Cool Power 25%, my 1/2A mix. Omega 10% was tried and we only lost a few hundred RPM.

The plug carrier has a #8 OS Turbo Plug. On the 25% fuel, power was a bit better than diesel, on 10% a bit less.

I'm pleased to see that the Norvel .15 will swing a big prop with gusto and with the same power as it does on diesel.

But RPMs are only one aspect. We may find that in the air, the diesel will churn away in the verticals while the glow will bog. This is something I've seen with the .074. No reason to believe the .15 won't be any different. And THAT is the advantage of diesel.

  • The engine itself is Russian made and is quite sophisticated and of very high quality. What I made was the adjustable compression head. Quite a trick and only possible because of the unique head design. Which also allows for the installation of an adjustable compression diesel head.
