One of the things I love about travel is to discover local places that are not necessarily frequented by tourists. We started the day by driving west from Dorado into the coastal town of Arecibo which was settled in 1556. Caught in a downpour, we watched the goings-on on the main square ducked underneath a balcony. This town was definitely not a tourist town, and some of the rather run-down buildings away from the main square attested to that. When we were trying to find our way out of town to Highway 10 for a connection to the south coast, a local security guard took pity on us and guided us out of this city. Arecibo is most famous for the nearby Arecibo Observatory, an enormous radio telescope that measures 305 m in diameter and was featured in the James Bond movie "GoldenEye" as well as in the film "Contact".

  • You went from Arecibo to Ponce right through the mountains, not an easy drive. You could have gone to the western tip of the Island through the north then head south to an important city: Mayaguez. And then head southeast to Ponce ;)

  • @jv0507: Actually I intentionally picked this route since I wanted to see what the interior of the island is like. You are definitely right - it's not an easy or short drive, but it was great to drive through some of the local towns that are not usually explored by tourists.

  • Lol. Its all under renovation. But how ever most people missed the most important part of you video " a local helping out a stranger" it most have been a wonderful experience specialy since I am from ARECIBO and know for a fact that he guided you thrue the right road. and nice vistas. • Thanks for posting ... We had the same experience in Mayaguez ... Stopped at a Walgreens for candy and directions .. The manager of the store not only gave us directions, but then insisted we follow him to our destination ... We never would have found it on our own ..

The people of Puerto Rico are the most helpful and friendliest people .... Cannot wait to go back again ....

  • Jacked ? Are you kidding? Its Puerto Rico, not Mexico !!!

  • WTF!! que haces en Puerto Rico amiga?

  • Hi !

I hope you liked my island, but i suggest you, if there is a next time trip, to get a GPS, They work well... You can also get a map (they are sold every where) or do some local friendships... Things are changing... like in every place around the world. Despite that you can still find nice persons, it is truth too that there are a lot of mad people.

    God bless you...

PS... Seeing your videos i think you only saw least than 5% of the island.
