Inflation stayed at one point eight per cent last month.
The figures from the Office for National Statistics surprised many analysts who believed that it would fall to one and a half per cent.
The retail prices index also shocked experts with its movement after rising unexpectedly to minus one point four per cent.
Food and drink are still exerting strong downward pressure but computer games, DVDs and furniture kept prices up.
