  • I just want to thank you guys at Projects in Metal. I actually work in a machine shop, operating CNC machines. I've been in the machining trade for almost 5 years now but I have NEVER understood how to properly sharpen a drill. I think I get it now! The problem I've had jumping into work without any formal training is I don't know how to do things like this and no one has the patience to teach me while they're busy doing their job. Tomorrow I'll take a stab at it.

  • @0x1 Well, it's been a day, how did it go? Did you get a chance to try your own hand at sharpening? In any case we are glad you liked the videos! Good luck on learning to sharpen your own bits. It's really not that hard once you get the hang of it.

  • Brilliant instructive video. your attention to detail is very good, i'm gonna bet you've taught before... i have seen large bits sharpened when working in an engineering factory, looks easy until you try without being shown. Thank you.

  • @hullsmillfarm Barry is indeed an instructor at Bates Technical College in Tacoma WA. I started a machining website for beginners (link in video description) after taking night classes from Barry. It quickly became apparent that video tutorials would be very helpful to my visitors so we decided to work together to produce these videos. I'm glad you found the video helpful. Be sure to subscribe to the ProjectsInMetal channel, we have more videos coming soon!

  • Thank you! Have tried this before but never got good result. Now it works much better. Always missed grinding the heel of..

  • @detvardasatanme Glad the video helped! Grinding the heel is critical. You don't need to grind a lot away, just enough so that the heel doesn't interfere with the cutting action of the lips. We remove quite a bit of the heel in the video, more than is necessary. But we did so to illustrate the process.

  • let talk about safety before we start grinding ohhh yess ;)

  • ...Awesome - Thank you

  • @0x1 Do you no if these gauges come with adjustable heads so you are able to grind drills to different angles, when cutting different materials. cheers

  • @recidex harbor freight sell them. they call it a "multi-use rule"

  • where can you get those drill gauges from

  • @detvardasatanme

If you don't grind the heel away the drill will not penetrate. Glad you found the video helpful.
